Rambles of a River Rat is a series of memoirs of my late father, Thomas C. Tichenor, on his boyhood years primarily in Calhoun, Kentucky on the Green River. Written in the last decade of his life he shares the impressions and memories of his early years with a bit of an esoteric vocabulary and detailed writing style. Sometimes in chronological order, sometimes thematically he leads his audience into a boyhood world with a bit of coming of age thrown in for good measure. Lightly edited, the chapters are occasionally redundant.
His passion as a writer was for the Green River world. In addition, although he would not have been acquainted with the discussion, he is something of an advocate for “New Urbanism” anxious to promote the small town of his childhood as profoundly liveable with all of the needed goods, services, and social opportunities within walking distance.
While late life reflections often gloss over the more conflicted and complicated elements, he does allow us to see some of the conundrums and regrets of his childhood journey.
